No tears while watching, only pure shock.

The tears came after, not because these are my favorite characters or anything. But in the release from the tension created by almost-reunions.

These writers are so amazing - they have this way of playing out the tension and making us feel like we’re walking on eggshells, then allaying our fears and making us breathe a sigh of relief - only to shock us with what happens next. The best example before this was the end of the first episode where Bran was climbing the tower. They kept showing his footing and it made me think he was going to fall. Only to have him find the incestuous Lannister twins - but when Jamie started negotiating with him it lulled me into thinking that the shock value was done, they were siblings f*cking! But no, not finished! BAM, Bran shoved out the window. And again with this episode - the most awkward gathering in GoT history - Robb’s apology, the line of fug grand/daughters and Filch’s crass, creepy hirits at Talisa. But it’s ok, wedding going to happen, bride not ugly, happy smiles at the feast and a wedding bedding. Do not be fooled, Bea, it is the season’s episode 9!!!

Sigh. I’ve been waiting for family Stark to be together again. I’ve only just realized that this is a stupid wish because after Ned was killed off so early in the story, I guess it was only a matter of time before more of them died. But I was under some stupid misconception that we’d eventually get some kind of happy ending. The Lannisters don’t even need to all die, but the Starks were, in my head, supposed to see each other again!… even if the show has only gotten darker since that first episode. And whatever are the cliches that Hollywood blockbusters would have taught us to expect, Mr. Martin will revel in disrupting in these books. I.e. The hero isn’t supposed to die in Season 1!, and the stupid Lannisters keep effing winning!!!! Is there no justice in Westeros? Seriously, even when Ned was about to be killed I thought someone might save him - and that a ransom note or something would arrive asking for a Ned-Jamie trade and save him. Stupid Bea!

The most painful part is that these poor Starks weren’t even in it to win it. Robb only rebels because he wants to rescue his family. And sure there is a throne to be won and whatnot, but Ned established at the very start that Starks don’t care about the throne for themselves. All Ned ever wanted to do was uphold his required bit of participation in whatever war in the name of honor, but at the end of the day he’s happy to retire to his backward, un-modern side of the world and live peacefully with his family - as evidenced by his nine-year absence from court, which Robert comments on at the start. The height of his conflict is having to behead a deserter (which is required by law), and the extent of their family drama is sister-sibling-rivalry and mom not being over dad’s affair that rendered them a Stark bastard. But even said bastard is kabarkada and kuya to the full-fleged Starks and otherwise it is normal, steady and happy. In my perfect story world, Game of Thrones was going to be the Stark family story, about (cue trailer music) how they each had to find their own ways to be Ned-honorable and how that might take them so far away from each other, but how they’d find each other and be happy together in the end, Lannisters and Taergaryans be damned. Aaaaaaaaaargh I must be watching the wrong show.

They’re only all together for 10% of the first season and after that they’re split and splintered further and further apart. The genius of this episode came from the tension that came with watching groups of Starks get so close to each other, but never actually making it to meeting again. Annoyingly, it is the Hound who articulates and portends the worst possible outcome of the show: You’re almost there, and you think you won’t make it.

We get so wound up with the almost-ness of the reunions - Jon and the younger boys mere feet away from each other, and Arya finally, finally, after being passed around so many captors, en route to Cat and Robb. Even from Robb asking Cat for advice after being mad at her for so long (for releasing Jamie). The frustration was bad enough watching Jon ride away, not from his girlfriend but from his brothers! - though later he must process how two direwolves couldn’t have been there just by chance?! Then made worse by Bran asking Tonks to split from Team Warg and take Rickon to safety. And then to be lulled into a false sense of security from happiness at the wedding feast - I was actually thinking that the actors must have been so happy that Cat and Robb got to smile for a change! - only to be brutally slaughtered in a tiny room and not even on a battlefield. By a third party and not even a real Lannister. Even to the extent of seeing Arya head for Robb’s direwolf in the pen only to have him arrowed-down as well before Arya can reach him.

Brilliant and ghastly.

Poor Starks, were never good at playing politics, and never even guessed that their own man had turned on them. I have to wonder if the moral of the story is that one or more of the Starks is going to have to end up a lot darker or corrupt if they’re going to win in any way - and not win the throne, but just get anywhere in this insane game. Sigh, win or die, Starks! Or should we tell ourselves right now that they going to lose because they’re just too in love / honorable, etc? It’s sure we aren’t going to end up with a sugary ending and if we’ve learned anything so far it’s that it’s the audience who’s going to have to pay. With tears and wails of disbelief every season-penultimate episode. Haha aaaaaaargh.

(It’s been less than a week since I started and I’m all wound up in Game of Thrones. In this case I love being so surprised by everything - all the chatter about Ned dying I know I must have heard but it happened so long ago that I’d thankfully forgotten by the time I actually watched it. I saw social media chatter about the Red Wedding and for some reason I thought it would be a happy occasion! Tsk. But this story is unfolding, un-spoiled, right before my eyes and for that I am wound up and grateful.)

I love this song. I like them walking all over the theater district. I love those magical blocks between Times Square and Hell’s Kitchen. This wasn’t a perfect show by any measure but it was a good homage to Broadway. Goodbye, Smash.

It feels like I am being flung far outside my comfort zone, so far that I don’t even know what the borders are of this vast space. Like the lights have gone out and I’m left blindly feeling my way around. Out here it is bright sometimes but dark most times and it troubles me that it seems like it will be so arbitrary to stumble upon the door, island, circle or whatever will turn out to be the next best thing. Hopefully it will be best, and so far there are indications that it could happen. Some days it feels like the world is opening up to me, in industry ways and global prospects. But most of the time the heaviness of the I-don’t-know-yet is so scary. I think I’m more freaked out than I need to be but I just haven’t been in this kind of limbo in so long.

Tomorrow I get to fly to a could-be new zone. It is best in so, so many ways and I’ll try to figure out if I could be best there, too. As to the - what is the opposite of separation anxiety? - comfort zone bit, naturally Tumblr has a lot to say on the subject. Hopefully they’re right.
